wild and wonderful

last week we went on a mini vacation. we cooked lots of yummy food. went out to dinner. watched too many episodes of downton abbey. had playtime outside. went antiquing and just enjoyed being away for a while. the little man had a blast at the playground. doesn't he look like such a little daredevil? his dad tried going down with him but they got stuck... let me tell you, those slides are not made for us adults. so we just stuck to catching him and taking pictures.
i loved that evening sun. just gorgeous.

have a wonderful weekend

Well, I had planned to post some pictures from our trip to West Virginia today but then I got caught up doing some major cleaning of our bedroom, my closet (baaaad) and the bathroom. Logan has been such a champ at taking his naps around the same time every day and he also lets us sleep through the night from 8 until 8 or even 9 the next morning! I don't know why and how we ended up with this great sleeper but I am enjoying it while it lasts ;) Plus, I am getting stuff done again.

We also had an hour of playtime with the neighbors' daughter who is 19 months. They don't really play with each other much yet, but they do interact some and I just love being able to see her go from this tiny little baby that we babysat so much, to a full blown toddler. It just goes so incredibly fast it's hard to take it all in sometimes.

{style files} plaid stroller safari

JCrew Jacket, A&F Shirt, JCrew Matchstick Cords, Converse One Star Sneakers, Michael Kors Watch, Lip Color Coral by Revlon

i wore this on sunday to go stroller shopping, run some errands and celebrate my brother-in-law's 24th birthday. this was super comfortable but still looked put together enough for a birthday party.

now the rest of this post is all mom business so be aware. we are looking to buy a good quality umbrella stroller for logan since we've been traveling so much and are going on a few more trips in the near future. we currently use our chicco cortina stoller that fits his infant car seat. it's a great stroller but now that he's getting bigger and we don't really keep him in the infant seat anymore, it's been more of a hassle having to haul this big heavy stroller around. it is definitely not something i would want to take on the plane and through the airport with me.
when we bought it we also got one of those cheap umbrella strollers for free but it's way too basic and we both have to hunch over to even be able to push it.
so now we're looking for a lightweight umbrella stroller with a canopy and some storage underneath. i think we've got it narrowed down to a couple but i just had to make sure i tried them out in the store. i'm glad i did because one model was way cheaper looking and feeling in person that just looking at the pictures online.
wow, that was a lot about strollers, i probably lost most of you during that first line...

well, that's the exciting life of a mom: running errands around town and trying to figure out what stroller to buy.

cabbage & miracles

i love cabbage. cabbage and i we're tight. tight like i want to eat cabbage prepared in lots of different, yummy, delicious ways. if you don't like cabbage that's kind of sad. but maybe you just don't know if you like cabbage because you really never eat cabbage.

that, we can change and here are my reasons:

the first thing you should know about cabbage is that not only does it taste wonderful, it can also help you lose weight. yeah I know, that darn miraculous cabbage.
it actually takes your body more energy to burn that cabbage than there are calories contained in it. it barely has any calories to begin with so i guess that's a win-win situation. aside from the calorie thing cabbage contains lots of valuable nutrients and helps your body produce enzymes that fight off cancer. and who likes that cancer anyway?
now i'm not a doctor or nutritionist or anything of that sort so please don't use me as your source in your research paper, k? i'm also not going to speak of the smelly side effects associated with eating lots of cabbage. you're just gonna have to deal with that. we do.

you can eat cabbage raw, steamed or cooked and it's pretty much always going to be delicious
cabbage and noodles is a favorite at our house but i recently stole this recipe from my dad (thanks dad, you're the best cook) and it has got to be my new food obsession. obsession like i bought 3 different heads of cabbage at different stores within 3 days...

here's what you need:

  • one head of savoy cabbage cut into 1/2" strips
  • chopped up onions
  • some butter (yes, real butter)
  • vegetable broth/stock (you may water that down if you like)
  • heavy whipping cream or half&half (you can also use milk and some flour to thicken it up)
  • salt
  • pepper
  • nutmeg
sauté the onions in the butter and add the cabbage strips. add vegetable broth and let everything simmer until the cabbage becomes soft. don't let it get too soft, you still want to eat it with a fork.
add in the cream (or whichever you choose) and season to taste. done.

here is how we had it for dinner with some garlic and roasted tomato polenta, cottage cheese and homemade organic apple sauce. delicious.

i'm gonna stop harassing you about cabbage now. i just thought you should know what you're missing out on if you're not a regular cabbage eater.
